How to layer your natural skin care for the best results

Have you ever stood frozen - staring at the array of skincare products before you - completely confused of what you’re meant to do first?

You’re not alone, we’ve been there too :)

It can be incredibly confusing because most people’s routines start with 3, 4 or 5 products, but we’ve seen people who use as many as 10 products for their morning routine, and a whole different set for PM. Golly!

Getting the order right can be very important to make sure your product does it job effectively.

You don’t want your moisturiser being like a tractor on a one lane road and not allowing your serum to get past.

Just remember - Light to Heavy

Now don’t worry if your don’t use every product listed. That is ok because we don’t either.

1. Cleanser (it goes without saying really)

Cleansing properly sets the foundation for everything. Nice, clean skin allows everything else to sink in to the max and release its magic. That is why there are 3 Happy cleansers Cloud 9 Deep Cleansing Balm, 3 Cheers Cleansing Oil and the Chirpy Charcoal Cleansing Gel

2. Toner/Tonic

These will rebalance your skin, remove any cleanser residue, hydrate and plump your skin and act as a carrier so that more goodness from you next layer gets deeper into your skin. Make sure you choose the right one for your skin type!

3. Serums/Gels

Serums can get a little confusing because some serums are water based gels, some are very light creamy emulsions, and others are facial oils just called serums. Luckily they all fit into the same spot. Serums are concentrated nutrition bombs for you skin so you want them applied before your moisturiser to clean, balanced skin.

This includes eye serums like the Happily Ever After Vitamin C Eye Serum (which, by the way, can be used all over your face!).

On a quick side note, if you use a spot treatment use that before your serum so that you give it the best chance of correcting the spot.

4. Moisturiser or Facial Oil

Next in line are the hydrators. These will lock in the serum goodness as well as give you some vital moisture. If you like to use a cream and facial oil apply facial oil first and cream second. You want creams last as they contain the emollients to protect your skin from moisture loss.

We find that most people generally don’t need both facial oil AND moisturiser, but when your skin is super dry or you’re going through seasonal changes (ugh… breakouts/dryness/oiliness… sometimes all at once!) then this can be a time to bring in the big guns.

5. Sunscreen

We personally recommend physical barrier based sunscreens. They use physical blockers like zinc instead of potentially dodgy synthetic ingredients. For barrier based sunscreens to work properly and not get in the way of your other products they go on last. There is no way a whiz bang serum is getting through a layer of zinc :)

We hope that this quick overview has helped to demystify the process (and that there are no more blank stares and “what the!?” moments in your bathroom)!
